I’m stoked to welcome back James Ignatowich, top-5 ranked pickleball player in the world, for this week’s Level Up.
Hey Pickleheads readers,
I often get asked, “How do I hit my serves hard, consistently, without the ball going out?”.
Well, we obviously want to serve with a lot of pace. But we also want our serves to be in, right?
The most common mistake I see at the rec level is players heads and bodies popping up when they make contact with the serve.
You see, with the serve, we want to hit the ball with a linear trajectory. You can have a little bit of height, but you should be aiming for pace and depth.
So, if you’re popping up your head when you’re about to make contact with the ball, and you’re hitting it hard, it’s very likely your serve will go out.
To stop this, keep your head down and keep your eye on the ball as you make contact with the serve. This way, your head and chest naturally stay low.
If you’re not looking at the contact, you’ll more than likely pop your head and body up. And if you’re serving hard, the ball will more than likely go out.
