🏗️ Pickleball courts planned—but at what cost to community spaces?
A new $2 billion beachfront development in Fort Lauderdale has sparked controversy after residents learned that decades-old basketball courts may be removed to make room for pickleball.
The courts sit near the site of a 1960s civil rights milestone that desegregated local beaches—and they’ve remained a vibrant hub for players from across the city, especially on weekends.
Many in the community say they were unaware the basketball courts would be removed until signs went up last month announcing pickleball was “coming soon.”
Critics say replacing the courts would erase a long-standing gathering place for players of all ages and backgrounds. Supporters of the project say pickleball’s broader appeal made it a natural fit for the revitalized space.
Our take? This is about more than sport—it’s a reminder that public courts are often more than just places to play. They’re where culture, community, and connection live.
