🤾‍♀️ How to defend an overhead

Excited to welcome back James Ignatowich, top-5 ranked pickleball player in the world, for this week’s Level Up.

Oh, no! You’ve just popped the ball up to your opponent and perfectly set them up for an overhead smash. Don’t worry, it happens!

But what you do next is important…

When you’re just about to have an overhead hit at you, the first thing you should be focused on is your feet!

You need to get back with your paddle low!

If you're back near the baseline and your paddle is above waist-height you’re defending nothing.

Why? Because if you’re back near the baseline and the ball comes at you above waist-height, it’s going to be out!

Second, if your opponent looks like they’re going to crush an overhead at you, get behind the baseline. Give yourself space and time.

You see, the thing about a pickleball is, no matter how hard an overhead is hit at you, as soon as the ball hits the floor it slows down.

If you’re behind the baseline, you’ve got the space to react. Once the ball bounces and it’s slowed, you’ll have more time to react too.

Following these two easy steps will help you defend those fierce overhead smashes more effectively and take your game to the next level.

According to Bloomberg (Jo Constantz), pickleball is emerging as a popular alternative to golf for corporate events, being more inclusive and easier for newcomers to play.

Corporate professionals are finding pickleball to be more efficient for networking and team-building.
