I often hear a lot of pickleball players say, āYou should slow down the ball when your opponent is speeding up at you.ā
The problem is, you could be the worldās best resetter in the world, but what does that show your opponent?
It shows them youāre not a threat! This encourages them to keep speeding the ball up without worrying about any repercussions.
Also, a reset is far more a difficult shot than a speed up. You have to take off the right amount of pace AND drop that ball into the kitchen.
Whereas your opponent can hit the ball towards any place in your half of the court and it will go in.
So, how do you flip the script?
Instead of just resetting, add an element of unpredictability. Mix in a counterattack! When you counter a speed-up with controlled aggression, you're sending a clear message: Bring the heat, and Iāll bring it right back.
A well-placed counterattack not only puts pressure on your opponent but also forces them to rethink their strategy. The key is to stay balanced, pick your moments, and aim for spots that challenge their positioning.
