š¢ Carmel-by-the-Sea could be Californiaās first town to ban pickleball
Pickleballās pop-pop-pop may be music to our ears, but in Carmel-by-the-Sea, some residents say it sounds more like a never-ending drumline outside their bedroom window. The famously wealthy coastal town is on track to become the first city in California to permanently ban pickleball, according to SFGate.
The battle centers on Forest Hill Park, home to Carmelās lone pickleball court. Neighbors say the sound carries through gardens, patios and even closed windows. For two years, the city tried everything: limited hours, softer paddles, quieter balls, voluntary rules. Nothing stuck.
A temporary ban went into effect in October, and residents quickly reported a blissful return to peace and quiet. Now they want that quiet to be permanent. Even offers from local players to switch to ultra-quiet gear havenāt convinced the City Council, which says enforcement would be too messy.
Local players will get two chances to appeal. But the evidence doesnāt look very promising⦠š¢
